Rott: Press

Q) Who are Rott, and how did you meet each other?

Danny Profitt guitars and myself for vocals. We recently used our friend Les from the band Riled and our original bassist Dustin for the FotV (Flight of the Valkyries) show in St. Paul, Minnesota but it is just us two who write the music and lyrics. I have known Danny since we were kids. We both used to live in the Seattle area and had mutual friends in various bands there. I joined the lineup in 2002 when the band was looking for a singer and I was a little hesitant at first to try out. Evidently it was a good audition (smiles) and things took off from there.

(Q) It seems that Rott have received a number of differing opinions as to your sound, how would you personally define yourselves?

This is always a tough one for me to describe a given style for our sound but our music is female fronted vocals with heavy and melodic guitar driven riffs. Thought provoking lyrics and a lot of passionate emphasis on head banging. I don’t use effects to get the distorted male sounding style or sing in a way that would give that particular sound. I just try and feel how the song flows for me and want to capture the essence of the emotion I am trying to convey with a given melody. Maybe Tool meets The Cranberries. That would be the closest thing to describing the sound of Rott.

(Q) Would it be fair to say your decision to sign with Ravenheart Music was because of their status as being one of the leaders in promoting female fronted music?

You took the words right out of my mouth Adam. Dave Smith of Ravenheart Music is extremely passionate about getting us ladies the exposure we are due. He has great connections and a wonderful reputation in the music community in the UK as well as over in the states. I think he would be surprised to know just how big Ravenheart Music really is. I am very honored and humbled to be associated with him to be quite honest. His intuition on bands in our genre is amazing. We had more than one choice of labels and I am happy I made the decision I did to go with the obvious best choice- Ravenheart Music!

(Q) Earlier this year you released the album "Out of Time", for those of us who haven't heard this yet what can you tell us about it?

Actually the CD is going to be re-released September 7th for the UK on Ravenheart Music Records since prior to that it was an import outside of the US. I am pretty excited about it and so are the fans. I keep getting emails from fans who are discouraged about not being able to find it over here in the UK and in Europe as well. So that will be a nice thing for sure. The songs on the album range from dark melodic ballads such as “Crying Inside” and “Tortured Souls” to Metallica or Tool type sounding heavy stuff I suppose such as, “Out of Time”, “Eternal” and “Afterlife.” I was told that it actually stopped the stage manager at our last show and he had to stop what he was doing and listen since it drew him in, a first for him. I was thrilled to hear that!

(Q) On June 27th, you played at the first ever Flight of the Valkyries Metal Festival alongside other female fronted acts like Doro, Shadowside and Dendura. What do you have to say about this?

The 3rd Flight of the Valkyries show on June 27th in St. Paul was fabulous beyond belief! Everyone was so friendly and I had a blast. Bobbie and Nathan the co-founders deserve some serious props for an absolutely amazing event. They are nothing short of angels sent down from rock and roll heaven. Securing an amazing forum for us to play, promoting, advertising, feeding us, providing door prizes for fans, ect. I was so lucky I actually got to meet Bobbie. It made my night that is for sure. I would put that one on my calendar Adam as it is not something to miss. We were the replacement opening act for Blood Corps and we were followed by the amazingly talented bands Kaptivating Kate, Sirens of Titan, A.D.D., Hydrogyn, Todesbonden, Luna Mortis, and Benedictum.

(Q) Do you think there should be more festivals/events such as this in order to showcase the female side of rock/metal?

Absolutely! The fans came out in droves to support the show. It was an overwhelmingly positive experience. I really feel the time is NOW for the female voice to take a prominent share of the market in metal music. I’d love to see magazines like Revolver in the states not have to do features like “The Hottest Chicks In Metal” but rather be completely gender blind to be honest.

(Q) Who do you personally think has done the most to advance the recognition of female fronted rock/metal?

Well I can only speak from my experience, but in the US, probably Diana and Alan Meltzer and Steve Lerner at Wind-up Records signing and promoting Amy Lee and Ben Moody of Evanescence to becoming internationally known.

(Q) Since your original formation, Rott have built up quite an international following. If you had your pick of countries to tour in which would it be and why?

The densest concentrations of fan bases would be how I would chose. There are so many beautiful and exotic lands we love to tour in. Just a few in the order of fan loyalty would be Italy, The Netherlands, Greece, the UK and Germany. The East Coast of the US also has a large percentage of fans as well. Of course since the bassist I would love to use is Vince in France it would definitely be on the list as well. (smiles)

(Q) You stated in an interview with The Metal Pit last month that you have most of the songs written for your new CD. I know you probably don't want to give away too much but in terms of comparison how will this be different from Out of Time?

Well I am going to have to say that it will be very much along the lines of our new single “Bring Me the Flame”, which is out as a digital release at the moment on iTunes and Amazon UK. I am pretty tight lipped about releasing too much info on the new CD. Our sound has evolved somewhat since we recorded Out of Time so hopefully we’ve sharpened our talents as musicians to take things to the next level. It will still be energetic, fun and thought provoking at the same time. There will still be that dark gothic vibe as well since that is our style. Trust me it will be incredible.

(Q) You also expressed in this interview an admiration for Courtney Love, a point being her jumping fearlessly into a mosh pit. Would you ever consider replicating the action of one of your heroes by doing this yourself?

Absolutely! Life’s too short to not grab every experience that comes along. Besides I never could get the hang of actual ocean surfing (balance issues), so crowd surfing is the next best substitute (smiles).

(Q) When not rehearsing/recording songs or performing live what can Molly Sirenne usually be found doing?

I really enjoy going to see other bands perform. I love music and everything it encompasses. Concerts in particular are a favorite of mine. I am going to be at Lacuna Coil in less than two weeks on July 15th and I can hardly wait. Spending time answering the fans on our MySpace site as much as time allows and checking out new bands and fellow musicians and catching up with friends. I love home improvement projects so I usually have some kind of power tool going in my spare time. Playing with my rottweiler pups and swimming as well as trying to help with philanthropy for various causes. Hopefully I can help make a difference and make the world a little brighter for someone.

(Q)Thank you for your time, is there anything else you would like to say?

Thank you so much for your interest in Rott. It’s been my pleasure doing this interview and I am very honored Adam. May the sun come out in England for you! Love to all my fans you guys are the best. See you soon.

Interview with Molly of ROTT. Interview by NICK. June 2009.

Rott is a band from Spirit Lake, Idaho (U.S.) whose vocalist Molly Sirenne has a very haunting and Gothic type of voice that gives this band a sort of ethereal sound quality that combines with traditional Metal as well to make for a very interesting sounding band. They will be the opening band on the Flight of the Valkyries stage this year.

Rott

Molly: Thank you so much Nick for the honor of interviewing me. We are thrilled to be opening Flight of the Valkyries this year as I have been following the press on this massive event for quite some time.

THE METAL PIT: Your band Rott is from Idaho which I would think is not really a hotbed of Heavy Metal music. What is the scene like there and what made you decide to play Metal?

Molly: The scene in Spokane, Washington and the Northern panhandle (as we call it) area of Northern Idaho isn’t as big as Seattle. I do feel however that we’re the little engine that could. A close friend of mine owns a club in Coeur d’Alene that consistently attracts big name metal acts. He’s had everyone from former Scorpions guitarist Uli Jon Roth to LA Guns to Powerman 5000. I have a hard time recalling there have been so many. In Spokane the closest big city to me, there are several great forums. The Knitting Factory and the Boulevard attract big acts as well as the Spokane Arena. Godsmack, Tool, Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation and other huge acts have played Spokane and I have been there watching trust me. JP from Rock 94 ½ in Spokane is a good friend and major promoter in getting local bands as well as bringing major forces in metal to our little corner of the world. They rock!

THE METAL PIT: The band has been compared to everything from Godsmack to Lacuna Coil and I have heard people say you remind them of Dolores the singer from the Cranberries, what do have to say about those comparisons?

Molly: Well to even be mentioned along with those bands and singers is an incredible honor for me. I am very humbled and flattered that those comparisons are made in fact. As far as my vocals go though, they are pretty different than Sully, Cristina, or Delores but I think the style of our music has some similarities. I just try and bring my own personality and energy to the music. It’s not too hard since I am involved writing the songs and I am happy people like what they hear.

THE METAL PIT: Your cd "Out of Time" was released in 2007 and created a very cool buzz about this band, what has the last few years been like for you since that time?

Molly: Amazing! Everyday we “feel the love” of thousands of fans around the world via our myspace site www.myspace.com/rottband. Hearing positive feedback from the fans I’d have to say is my favorite part. We have also been pursued by the media for everything from stories, interviews, e-Books, and radio spots for helping to promote attention for charities which is awesome.

THE METAL PIT: One of my favorite tunes on the cd is "Tortured Souls" and it seems to have some very personal and disturbing lyrics, can you tell us a little about the meaning behind that song?

Molly: Yes. Tortured Souls “little Susie” was a classmate of our guitarist Dan growing up. She died at the hands of her stepfather. Sad to say, but it was common knowledge that there was abuse going on for quite some time. Unfortunately, the community did not step in and help. I cannot sing that song without a little lump in my throat. It is my desire that more attention is drawn to helping eliminate child abuse.

THE METAL PIT: Has the band had a chance to play a lot of live shows and if so how where were some of your favorite places to play?

Molly: We played a lot of live shows when Rott first formed. My favorite place to play has always been The Grail since it is like being home for me. They are so nice there it is just mind blowing. We were hoping after Out of Time was first released on our last record label to do more. However things did not end up that way which I was disappointed about since the fans have been waiting patiently for so long. Now I have the chance to make it up to them on our new label Ravenheart Music Records.

THE METAL PIT: How did you hear about the Valkyries festival?

Molly: I am a metal fan as well as a singer after all. And the Valkyries festival is legendary! The acts it’s attracted are huge. Every year I’ve checked out the concert pics online and they looked amazing. Also, we are being managed now by Ravenheart Music and Dave Smith. Ravenheart Music and Femme Metal in the UK are sponsors and promoting the show which is super cool. Thanks so much!

THE METAL PIT: Who are some of the bands that have inspired you to get into Metal?

Molly: There are many, but one in particular is Hole. Grunge was huge when I was little growing up in Seattle. I thought, wow there’s a strong woman who really rocks. I didn’t really clue in to the grittiness of the lyrics. It was just really fun to sing along to with your girlfriends. Courtney Love is the best! She’d jump right off the stage into the mosh pit with a dress on too. No fear!

THE METAL PIT: What is your view on women in the scene today?

Molly: There are no limits. If you have the talent, dedication, perseverance, strength and determination anyone, regardless of gender can be successful I believe. It would be naïve of me to think doors have never been shut. Or that they were never opened due to a singer being female. I however remain optimistic about people’s ability to let the music speak for itself. Look at this spectacular forum of the Flight of the Valkyries festival for instance. Or Ozzfest with Jada Pinkett Smith of Wicked Wisdom and Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil. Apparently Ozzy Osbourne had no problems about including these women. (smiles)

THE METAL PIT: Rott is involved with the "Rock for Hope Concert", can you tell us a little about that and how you got involved?

Molly: Well, I have always felt it is important to help others and give back to the community and make a difference whenever and wherever you can. I am especially interested in helping children and animals. The Rock for Hope Concert is for children with cancer. It came to my attention through a friend of mine at Official Metal Castle. I wanted to make sure I contributed with getting the word out. The concert is 50 miles from St. Louis, MO. at the Warren County Fairground.

THE METAL PIT: So, after the Flight of the Valkyries Festival, what is in the near future for the band, a new cd on the horizon maybe?

Molly: We have most of the songs written for our new CD and Foundry Studios in Seattle picked out to record it. We recorded our new single "Bring Me the Flame" there in March and I am pleased with the results. It's going to be used in a upcoming movie soundtrack and was released worldwide digitally on iTunes and Amazon in May. It's going to be used in a thriller movie but I hear that our management is going to do some exciting things promotion wise for the 2012 Olympics coming to London, England. Maybe even as the theme song, how cool is that!! (smiles)

THE METAL PIT: Molly, it has been great talking with you today. Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions. Have fun at the festival and good luck in the rest of 2009 with the band.

Molly: Thank you so much for such intelligent and complimentary questions and everyone at THE METAL PIT for this interview. I get a lot of requests and asked a bunch of interview questions and it's refreshing to get some which are unique and fun as well. I and the rest of ROTT are definitely looking forward to the Festival and seeing all the awesome femme metal fans. For those of you who don't have a ticket yet, shake off the winter cobwebs and let's rock this summer! Love to all my fans. You guys are the best!!

St. Paul, Minnesota (Billboard Publicity Wire) June 4, 2009 -- Flight of the Valkyries, America's premiere female-fronted metal fest - the first of its kind in the U.S. - was forced to make a last-minute change when Blood Corps, an up-and-coming band from Virginia, experienced a brush with death.

According to festival co-founder Bobbie Jeans Dickerson, Blood Corps was on their way to do some promotion out of town when their bass player’s car caught fire on the highway. They managed to pull the car over and everyone scrambled out before the car was engulfed in flames. But the experienced left the band shaken and in dire financial straits. (For more info on Blood Corps’ harrowing experience, see the band's latest myspace blog.)

“Our hearts go out to Blood Corps,” said Dickerson. “We absolutely understand why they aren’t able to be the opening act in the 2009 FLIGHT OF THE VALKYRIES (FotV) festival. There are no hard feelings. In fact, Nina Osegueda, Blood Corps’ vocalist, still plans to attend. We’re working out the details for a special performance with her as part of this year’s events.”

According to Dickerson, fans will be thrilled with Blood Corps’ replacement: Rott of Spirit Lake, Idaho. (http://rottband.com/http://www.myspace.com/rottband).

Rott masterfully combines powerful, haunting vocals and melodic harmonies – with gothic undertones, crunchy guitars, and thought-provoking lyrics – to create a magical sound all their own. Signed to UK label Ravenheart Music Records, Rott draws influences from bands like Lacuna Coil, Tool, Alice in Chains, Evanescence, Within Temptation and Otep as well as old-school speed-metal bands.

“This band makes my blood run cold in an awesome way!” said Dickerson. “I’m excited to see them perform on our stage and kick off this year’s festival in true Flight of the Valkyries fashion. Fans are going to love these guys.”

Dickerson thanks Rott and their management at Ravenheart Music for working to fill this important role on such short notice.

Rott joins (in order of appearance) Kaptivating Kate, Sirens of Titan, A.D.D, Hydrogyn, Todesbonden, Luna Mortis, and headliner Benedictum at this year’s FotV festival, the third annual installment of this fast-growing metal fest.

Tickets for the 2009 Flight of the Valkyries festival are on sale now. Ticket prices are $15 in advance and $20 on the day of show, Saturday, June 27th. Doors open at 3:00 pm. The show is 16+.

Tickets for the Flight of the Valkyries festival can be purchased here: http://swordlordproductions.indietic...tomer/home.php

FotV has welcomed many female-fronted metal bands that have toured extensively abroad but haven’t had a chance to showcase their talents Stateside, bands that include both well-known and up-and-coming female-fronted bands such as Doro, Shadowside, Vainglory, and Dendura.

FotV is the first annual music festival of its kind in the US devoted to metal bands with female lead vocalists. The festival, which debuted in 2007, showcases all metal sub-genres with the only common denominator (and festival requirement) being that a female vocalist must front the band.

Fans are encouraged to visit The Official FotV forum on UltimateMetal.com to keep abreast of all the latest FotV festival news.

Interview with Jason at Nocturnal Euphony Webzine
March 21, 2009

1. We are talking today with Molly Sirenne from the U.S. band Rott. So Molly as I understand it, Rott consists of yourself and Danny Profitt. Tell us about the Rott sound, and how you two write your music.

Rott’s sound consists of heavy guitar driven riffs and choruses sandwiched between melodic female vocals. We seem to attract fans with tastes that range from Iron Maiden to My Chemical Romance. Hopefully there is something in our style that appeals to a wide range of metalheads too. I really enjoy bands where you can really get into the music and the energy behind it.

Our writing is actually a collaboration of thoughts and ideas that may be new or may have been written but then later people think they are so good we sometimes revisit those to make the songs even better. It seems like to me I am my own worst critic and if someone else happens to enjoy the songs, I am elated. Danny writes the lyrics and then I work at changing a word or two to make it easier to sing and flow with the vocal melody as well as tempo and style. I edit the writing some to match the structure of how I want to sing it which works very nicely.

2. Rott hail from the very small town of Spirit Lake, Idaho. So I would assume the band receives the majority of support from your outside connections, please elaborate.

Yes, the majority of our support comes from national and international sources. When we first formed in 2001, we followed the conventional route looking for publicity. We recorded our first demo in 2002 and it was well received overseas and we had several interviews and reviews in Poland, Romania, Greece, France and Argentina. We received airplay in Greece for the demo and then the fans started emailing me in droves wanting more.

We played local clubs, then we were interviewed and played on mainstream rock station Rock 94 ½ in Spokane, Washington. First by Tripp Rogers then later right before the ‘Afterlife’ single came out in June 2007 by JP at the station in May. I cannot thank them enough for the enormous support they give to local bands.

We then recorded Out of Time in the summer. That was when things hit the fast track after it was released ourselves in September 2007. In particular with being helped out by a number of people which I am very blessed and grateful to. (You know who you are). Dave Smith at Ravenheart Music was the one who landed us our first record contract in fact, but there are so many others I just have to say I am honored immensely and humbled by their support.

3. Does the band travel to play live or is it just a musical project?

The ultimate goal of our work is to be traveling and playing live to the fans who want to see us. Studio recording and promotions work, for me anyway, is just the conduit for that. We’ve done some traveling nationally already and are excited about international opportunities up ahead. Our goal is to play live in as many places as we can. As long as I have my band, my dog, and my sleeping bear with me – (As Metallica would say) wherever I lay my head is home. I don’t think I will mind using the finger toothbrushes or buying extra clothes to sleep in if I couldn’t find a laundromat! (laughs)

4. In keeping with the bands name, (non dog lovers, please allow us a moment) Tell us about your Rottweiler.

Well that is part of the reason behind the name but not all of it. My favorite breed of dogs is Rottweiler’s and my little girl’s name means gentle in Greek. She is 77 pounds of pure joy, love, and wigglyness; hey I just made up a new word! She hails from a small logging town here in Idaho called St. Maries. I answered an ad and brought her home as a puppy. I keep saying she should be the ambassador for Rott’s. No one could meet her and come away thinking they were ferocious, unless licking someone to death proves fatal.

5. Getting back to the music, your album "Out of Time" is now available through Ravenheart Music. What can our readers expect to hear from the album?

"Out Of Time" is our first release (other than our demo), and our pride and joy. It’s a variety of songs ranging from melodic and dark to heavy and pulsating. There are songs like ‘Brightest Star’ that are more radio friendly I suppose and other songs that only truly gothic and alternative fans would gravitate towards.

I would describe the music as edgy and melodic with a vocal style that has a diverse range between innocence and seduction. It is a heavy edge too, not candy coated by any means. Lyrically, the songs talk about topics like biblical apocalypse as in ‘Mysteries’, while ‘Afterlife’ has more of a theme about compassion versus the alternatives. ‘Tortured Souls’ denounces child abuse and ‘Brightest Star’ is about how shallow people, who didn’t quite believe in your potential see, that you have “made it” and now think you are great. I think mostly relationships and looking at things from different perspectives and viewpoints and reflecting on how that affects others.

6. How did Rott come to hook up with Ravenheart?

Dave Smith from Ravenheart Music http://www.ravenheartmusic.com contacted me via our MySpace page and sent me an email about wanting to do a review of our CD for the Ravenheart Music website. Dave has tirelessly worked to promote and educate the world about female fronted rock and metal through his website and I am so grateful as he has been an awesome friend as well. We continued to correspond via email long after the initial business of the music review. The more we spoke and wrote, the more I found us to be alike in our goal which includes giving female fronted metal a forum to be heard. I have really joined forces in a big way since then to do as much as I can to help him in any way possible. I do not know if I really did that much but I feel I am at least trying anyhow. He has now formed a record label called Ravenheart Music Records and I am happy to see that and help by sending new talent his way.

7. Now that the album is out what is the next big goal for the band?

We are going to Seattle the end of this month (March) to record a song for an upcoming movie soundtrack. See I did let you in on some secrets. (Smiles) We would like to get as much exposure as possible through this type of outlet for Rott’s music to be heard. Video games too would be righteous! Alternative, creative ways to sneak into people’s subconscious and get them wanting more. Before I knew who Michelle Branch was, I saw her on the side of a McDonald’s cup I think. In addition to more exposure through internet radio and awesome webzines and magazines like yours. Then of course after more exposure finishing recording the new CD will be great too. Can you say shiver…? (winks and smiles)

8. To me there are few other satisfactions like recording your own music. What does Rott mean to you?

Rott to me is the living breathing embodiment of my soul. Danny and I have poured so much of our hearts and personalities into this band that is Rott. There is nothing wrong with performing cover songs. Some bands do it extremely well but for me however, to perform our own music and see the response of an audience is to feel love and acceptance in its purest form.

9. Has the success so far surprised you and Danny? Were you expecting it?

We try to follow the principles of like attracts like and positive attracts positive. So believing that all things are possible is something I strive for. You have to believe in what you are doing and in that I felt confident that success would happen. I am humbled and honored really, and am very grateful. It is life changing to help give others hope as well.

10. In closing we would like to thank Molly for her time and wish Rott continued success. Molly any final words from you, and tell us where we can get Rott merchandise and the album.

Thank you Jason and all the wonderful staff at Nocturnal Euphony. It has been a pleasure and I really enjoyed your questions. You can get Rott merchandise and the CD by checking us out at our main Rott website http://www.rottband.com and our official MySpace site at http://www.myspace.com/rottband.

Oh and I now use Twitter too so if you want to know what I am doing at any given time you can find me there at http://twitter.com/rott.

Thank you to our fans for all the love and support. You guys are the best! See you soon!!

ROTT Interview
Written by Booti

Molly Sirenne of ROTT

Hi Molly, I would like to take a minute to thank you for doing this interview and welcome you to Toxik Tunes.

Well, I thank you Audra for giving me the privilege of being your first interview I hear. It is a very exciting thing!

(Q) I was amused when I read how your band got the name Rott, why don't you tell us about that.

We were kicking around some ideas. Boy, I wish I still had that old piece of scratch paper with all the band name ideas on it. It would be so funny. Well, I am not too sure I would want to share it publicly though. Anyhow- Rott sounded heavy like something putrid or decayed. Also, it is a great substitute for the word ROCK in any sentence, don’t you think? Try it out Audra – Rott on, let there be Rott, there’s only one way to Rott! Ha, ha. In addition to all that, I’m big into Rottweilers. I have a beautiful 3 year old girl who is our mascot in a way and I’m working on adopting another.

(Q) How many members are currently in the band? And what instruments do they play?

There are the original two. Myself and Danny Profitt, my long time best friend and fellow collaborator. We’ve been through several line ups actually, as I am sure other bands can relate too, although we have probably more than some and less than others. In fact I am going to let you in on a little secret. This has not even been made public yet so you have the inside scoop here. I will shortly be announcing a new keyboard player. She may even be from the UK and is super cool. We shall see. She will be doing some other cool things within the band as well, (smiles) So I can’t wait. It’s really all about being on the same page I’ve found, at the same time. Anyway, Danny plays guitar, bass, drums, piano and sings too in his side projects and I am blessed with the vocal cords. He does most of the writing and I the editing so it flows smoothly when I am singing the lyrics.

(Q) Where is Rott from? Have you relocated since forming the band?

Rott is from Spirit Lake, Idaho a small town of 1376 people in the northern part of the state. I get a lot of snow and I love it much better than the rain in Seattle, where I lived growing up.

(Q) Is this your first band?

Yes, unless you count mandatory marching band 6th through 8th grade. I shudder at the memory of the uniforms. Yikes!

(Q) Since joining the band, how has your life changed?

The world has become a lot smaller. As much as I appreciate the local support, it’s been amazing to interact and feel the love and positive energy of fellow music lovers nationally and globally. My manager and business partner Dave Smith of Ravenheart Music, http://www.ravenheartmusic.com resides in Kidderminster, England. Yet we speak almost daily via email and texting. It’s not unusual for me to be doing an interview for Mattey Magazine in Venezuela one minute and corresponding with a fan that lives in Estonia the next.

(Q) Did you have any help and support to get where you are today?

Absolutely. There are so many people I feel indebted to. And actually it is also about helping others as well. To me that is the reason we make music and it is wonderful to give something back to others whether in your community or across the world. Making a difference is so awesome. It would be hard for me to even begin to scratch the surface of all those who have helped but I will try! From the very beginning, Antonis Maglaras in Greece (Radio director, magazine editor, band manager, ect) encouraged me tremendously. Tripp Rogers and JP from Rock 94 ½ in Spokane, Washington played our music on the radio and are responsible for making a huge difference for local bands and bringing female fronted bands into our area for concerts. Carlo Basile, he encouraged me and is my mentor. My friend Vince from France who is an amazing bass player. My friend Razvan, who supported our debut self titled 2002 demo. We’ve recently re-connected and he is going to be doing all of our promotions in Romania. More recently, my afore mentioned best bud abroad, Dave Smith, who’s tirelessly worked to promote and educate the world about female fronted rock and metal through his website. Finally, my friend Steve from Official Metal Castle who gave me your contact info Audra. And so, so, so many others (Christine from Michigan, Sharon, Cristina, you know I love ya!)

(Q) Your first single 'Afterlife' is incredible. Who wrote this song, and why?

Thank you, I am honored. Danny wrote the song. As you can tell from the lyrics, it’s a call for us to start caring about our fellow human beings. To stop focusing on our differences, and to remember that this state of our being is just temporary and transitional. Without getting too much into politics, I feel that the recent changes here in the American presidential administration have given hope to many throughout the world. Hope and acceptance are what most people want and what the concept behind ‘Afterlife’ is.

(Q) What was your first onstage performance like? Were you nervous?

I would have to use the word “surreal” more than nervous. Exciting, thrilling, addicting, wanting more, the energy is amazing, creating a passion in me for sure. I once read singer/songwriter and star Michelle Branch got more nervous playing in front of just a couple people than playing to an audience of thousands. I’d have to say I am similar.

(Q) Rott is a metal/goth rock band, but are there any other genres of music that has influenced you?

Many- Blues, Gospel, Celtic, Techno, Industrial, you name it! There should be complete open mindedness to alternative styles if you really want to be a well rounded musician for me anyways. I have always gravitated to metal in particular however.

(Q) Can you tell us about your album "Out Of Time'?

(Q) What is your favorite track on the album?

Gosh that is like picking your favorite child or rottweiler puppy (smiles), not easy to do! If I had to pick, I would have to say the song that still gives me chills every time I sing it or hear it on the radio is ‘Tortured Souls’. I just hear a few bars and I instantly identify it as Rott’s theme. It was the first song I learned as the new singer. It creates such a gut-wrenching and yet hopeful vision. I just love it! It gets me pumped for vengeance.

(Q) Are you currently on tour?

Not right this second. Big plans are coming up for spring 2009. We’re currently working on a movie soundtrack, finishing up a video and writing and recording a few tracks for the new album which we may just introduce live for an added surprise.

(Q) Name one thing that you have with you at all times when you are out on the road.

Can I list two? My iPod and “Goth” bear. My much loved sleeping companion, who has had to undergo several cosmetic surgeries, (laughs). My dog likes him too unfortunately. “Goth” bear never leaves my side when I travel.

(Q) Any future plans of going back into the studio for a second album?

Actually it will be our third if you count the EP and yes! We have some really solid new songs and the creative energy is flowing very nicely. I have not chosen a studio yet but most likely it will be done in the UK or Europe.

(Q) What is the first song that comes to mind that inspired you to be a musician?

‘Celebrity Skin’ by Hole. No fear!

(Q) If you could meet any musician dead or alive who would it be?

Sharon den Adel. I’ve said her name many times before in interviews and I still feel just as passionate about her talent. Although I have met her. She is the singer for the band Within Temptation from The Netherlands. Her voice is like a nightingale and yet bone crushing.
America is going to continue to be missing out on amazing voices like hers until we can get mainstream media to open up. It is forward thinking people like you, Audra, using the web and radio who are giving us this outlet for exposure and we thank you. I am extremely grateful in fact.

(Q) Do you have any advice for anyone that wants to form a band?

Listen to the advice of people who have been in bands and in the industry. Never think you know it all already. Then formulate your own plan. Help others be successful. Never give up on your dream. Believe in your talent and be humble. Continue to grow and evolve. Use the internet, network and be especially kind to everyone you meet. Find that one bit of constructive information in an otherwise bad review. Don’t do gigs intoxicated. You never know who may be in the back watching. Celebrate after that great show people paid their hard earned money to watch and hear you perform.

(Q) What do you think you would be doing with your life if you weren't a musician?

I love working with animals and children. Rescue work in particular and helping orphans. Help those who cannot speak up for themselves. I am fortunate to be able to do this already to some extent by contributing with benefits and charities. Oh, and some type of work that would involve power tools, saws, woodworking and painting. I guess with the housing market on its ass, I probably shouldn’t leave the lucrative music industry for construction at this time. (smiles)

(Q) I guess that about wraps it up. Is there anything you would like to add?

Thank you so much for the honor of this interview. I really enjoyed the questions! I wish big things for you Audra and Toxik Tunes. Rest assured, I will be among those checking out the first webzine issue in March and encouraging all my friends to do likewise. Catch you on the air. Love to all my fans. You guys are the best!

Rott

1. Hello Molly, first of all, it's nice to talk to you, after all these years and of course congratulations for your second album.

Hi Antonis, It is my pleasure to be doing an interview for such a wonderful friend. It’s long overdue, since our relationship stretches back to the old days of our demo when you were among the first to appreciate our music. We are very excited to have progressed to this point. Having a second album is tremendous. Having a fifth and eighth will even be more rocking!

2. It's been few months since the first press of "Rott - Out of Time" is out, how is the reaction from the fans so far?

The reaction from the fans is overwhelming! It should take an entire staff to get through all of the tons of emails daily, but I try and give each one my attention and a response if possible. By far everything has been super positive. Of course there are always new ideas and things to make it even better which we strive for. Some people find their favorites in one song more than another but I do the same thing so it is natural and to me I am fascinated by the fans telling me what a particular song means to them or which one is their favorite. I think there is enough diversity among the songs on Out of Time to find the one that speaks just to you. Sales are strong and with the continued media exposure, like this interview, positive things will continue to happen. In fact we have been honored with several other interviews and magazine articles this month which is very exciting.

3. Are you satisfied with the final result? Now that you have the time to hear again, would you like to change something?

More than satisfied, I am ecstatic. All the way from Aaron Birdsall at Audio Jerk Records to Bill Jacobs at Sonik Wheel we had such helpful and talented individuals guiding us with their expertise. The collaboration of all of us must have been pretty good to get us label interest. I will say however, if I could get in a time machine and dial back to May 2007 I think on the “Afterlife single” my vocals could have been more up front in the mix and on “Drowning” on the new CD it has this really cool Monk chanting effect which I would have liked to hear better in the final mix. My rottweiler seems to respond though so maybe it is up in the canine frequency! Just kidding, I think the one Monk needed to be louder though.

4. Recently we, read the news, that your band, has official ink a deal with a record label, are you satisfied with their help so far?

Of course every band has large goals for success and assumes once you are on a label you have got the means to that end. In reality, unless you’re on a huge label the job of selling yourself for yourself is really not over. We still do the lion’s share of our own publicity, which is fine as a stepping stone. I look forward to the day when I can have more time to focus on what the stage will look like and what corset to wear, (laughs). There are many bands that funding and time have to be split in a smaller company. What I keep in mind is how grateful I am for the production and distribution of our CD. We will continue to shine brightly and carve out our niche in the marketplace.

5. For those, who haven't heard, your band, can you describe your music?

I would describe Rott’s music as edgy and melodic. Imagine a pop fan screaming as she is drug up to the front row during a metal concert and strapped into her seat. Well similar to that. Seriously though female fronted vocals with a diverse range between innocence and seduction. Songs on the album are diverse and “Just Like You” and “Clearly Blind” have been compared to Courtney Love’s style while “Eternal” and “Afterlife” get more of a Metallica or Tool comparison. I think in part due to the dirgey qualities in those tracks. We just put our stuff out there and allowed our style to be defined by the fans we attracted. I guess it is true like attracts like so most of our fans fall into the metal, gothic, punk and symphonic genres. I have been told that the CD takes a few spins before it really hits you then it drags you in and does not let go. So you guys will have to give it a listen and decide for yourselves!

6. Tell me few things about the lyrics in your second album?

The lyrics are as different as the songs but in general follow a theme of seeing things from different perspectives. I suppose from a point of looking at what is your greater purpose and how that all plays into the big picture of why we are here, immortality and how things effect each other. We were not trying to do a specific theme album deliberately. I am a fan of that though and really enjoyed Queensryche’s “Operation Mindcrime” but it was so perfect how do you compete with that! (laughs) The lyrics have to do with topics like emotions and being kind and the alternatives to that.

7. Do you have plans for live shows in the near future?

Yes, very, very near. You heard it here first Antonis. I am pretty low-key and mysterious for the most part but I can tell you the fall of 2008 has been given some serious attention by me. I cannot give you specific dates however in this interview Antonis, but the wheels are in motion. We will be posting confirmed dates on the Rott website, http://www.rottband.com shortly. Our manager at Ravenheart Music, who hails from Kidderminster in the UK is eager to see us play I know that. So hopefully England is where we will start and then take it from there. Germany is looking promising and if I have anything to say about it we will be visiting our loyal fans in Greece, Italy and the Netherlands as well. Besides I have an iPod gathering dust that you know the story about. Several of our talented label mates have expressed a desire to tour with us. Francesca from Tular and Carla from La-Ventura just to name a few.

8. Maybe you will have ideas for new songs or it is too early?

Not too early! There are a lot of material ideas we’re sorting through. It is a little premature to give a taste right now. It is true that we have been working on new material and it is flowing hot and heavy through our veins right now. It is very exciting to be working on something new. I would like to say that we may even be doing a cover of Alanis Morissette’s song “Joining You” or possibly another well known artist’s cover song. We have not decided for sure as there are so many cool choices.

9. Thank you very much for your time Molly and I wish you all the best with Rott.

Thank you Antonis. I enjoyed your questions. I didn’t even “cut and paste” any from earlier interviews either. Are you proud of me?! By the way, you are a very cute and talented guy with great taste in music. I’m sure that won’t influence you in any way while you’re publishing this article. I am very honored for the opportunity to be interviewed again. I am coming for that dinner you promised to cook for me when Rott comes to Greece. Love to you and to all our amazing fans. You guys are the best. Kisses ~Molly
Antonis Maglaras - Fresh Magazine Greece (Nov 15, 2008)
Interview with Molly in Italy

Tiene a bada quei ragazzacci all’Ozzfest.

Dopo questa domanda vorrei parlare riguardo al tuo debut album “Out Of Time”.
Cosa significa per te il titolo “Out Of Time”?

“Out Of Time” essendo la title track dell’album è molto significativo.

La frase è “Om idag var den sista dagen du levde, hade du gjort en skillnad i någons liv?”e, tradotto in inglese, significa “If today was your final day, did you make a difference?”; (Se oggi è il tuo ultimo giorno,ha fatto qualche differenza NdR) ho deciso di metterla in questa lingua come provocazione per generare interesse.

Grazie Miriamo (in italiano, NdR). Baci - Molly.

ROTT are a band out of Idaho. Their debut CD is titled "Out Of Time" and it is available via Renaissance records. I don't mind telling you, that this CD has been in heavy rotation in my personal play-list. "Out Of Time" features eleven songs worth of well crafted, emotional and hauntingly beautiful music. Recently, I caught up with lead singer Molly Sirenne and she was kind enough to give me the low-down on what is happening with ROTT. Without further Adieu, this is what she had to say...
ROTT-Out Of Time (Ravenheart Music)

ROTT (not to be confused to the glamrockers of RATT!!) is a band from the northern part of Idaho, USA and their latest CD is called “Out Of Time”. Their name already sounds as black as the night and their sound isn’t quite happy either. It could make you happy though, if you like the dark and sometimes depressing sound of A PERFECT CIRCLE, TOOL or maybe even the later sound of L7. Low tuned, riffing guitars, gothic whispering vocals by a female singer, called Molly Sirenne and dark drum and bass beats are the main ingredients on this eleven song album. “Mysteries (Angels)” even contains some BLACK SABBATH influences. And a song like “Eternal” reminds me of the sound by EARTH AND FIRE (from Holland) and JEFFERSON AIRPLANE. While “Brightest Star” sounds a bit like the ROSE TATTOO classic “Stuck On You”, only with a more gothic approach. I know, that’s hard to believe, but check out these two songs back to back, and you’ll know what I mean. You’ll see, there’s a lot more to ROTT than just being another gothic metal band on the block. Besides Molly, the band consists of Dan Profitt on guitars, Carrie McNutt on piano and keyboards, Aaron Birdsall on bass and Michael ‘Mikeee’ McGill on drums. The riffs on “Drowning” are again very BLACK SABBATH influenced, but in general this song is very dreamy, which is a strange combination. The distorted vocals are something, that you wouldn’t really expect at all. That’s the unexpected in ROTT. Other magazines might say, that the band is still searching for a steady musical direction. We would like to explain it as a variety in styles. “Just Like You” has got those mighty, heavy riffs again and the CD closes with the title track “Out Of Time”. If you fancy something else than the average gothic metal band, then I suggest to have a listen to ROTT. Website: http://www.myspace.com/rottband. [7 points] (Toine van Poorten)
ROTT..'OUT OF TIME'

(Renaissance Records) Reviewed 7th August 2008

ROTT are from Idaho, and are an awesome outfit fronted by Molly Sirenne. Having independently released this little piece of plastic close on a year ago, it has now been re-released by Renaissance Records. The cd features slow and mid paced rockers, coupled with the distinctive and somewhat innocent vocal style of Molly. Couple this with Dan Profitt's crunching guitar riffs, and this is one helluva release. There are eleven superb songs, and I immensely enjoy what I hear, with my fave tracks being 'Eternal', 'Clearly Blind', 'Drowning', 'Just Like You' and the foot tapper 'Out Of Time'. This cd may take two or three plays before it grabs you, but once it does, it will not let go. Nice subtle keys by Carrie too I hasten to add. If you like Lacuna Coil and similar female fronted bands, plus may be Tool aswell, then check this release out. Live with it and it will not disappoint. Rott will also be featured in the latest Fireworks Melodic Rock zine (Aug/Sept issue) here in the UK. A good record!...8/10 (Reviewed by Dave).

We are happy to let everyone know that Fireworks Magazine Issue #33 Sept/Oct 2008 has the interview from Dave Smith at Ravenheart Music on page 31. So when it hits the newstands get one quick. They sell out after all.
I am not too familiar with many bands that come from the state of Idaho - none actually. That is until now. The band Rott hail from Spirit Lake, Idaho as a matter of fact. The music of Rott - for me - is hard to classify. They have been described as a mix of metal, rock and gothic, but maybe it should be up to the listener to decide for themselves about in which genre Rott's music lies. The band line-up includes: Molly Sirenne (vocals), Dan Profitt (guitars), Carrie McNutt (piano/keyboards), Aaron Birdsall (bass) and Michael McGill (drums). They have just released their debut album Out Of Time.

'Look Around' gets things started off with a nice piano intro as the vocals of Molly come in. This song starts off slow, before gaining some speed and heaviness around the first chorus. This is a moody number that one wouldn't think off as a typical opener, but it does a great job in setting the scene for what is to follow. Next up is 'Afterlife'. Another solid track that really keeps the tempo going in the right direction. This features a great riff by Dan Profitt and more stellar vocal work. With the third track 'Mysteries (Angels)', things really take off. I would have to say that this is my favorite song on this CD. It starts off slow with Molly's vocals coming in with a whisper, before she is joined by a heavy, doomy sounding riff. The next track 'Eternal' is another solid number with some excellent lyrics. It starts off with another nice piano passage and evolves into a dreamy number before a monstrous guitar riff comes in. At almost 7 minutes long, this is the longest song and there are some great changes here as it goes from soft to heavy and back again. This song has quickly become another favorite of mine. Next up is 'Clearly Blind' which is just 3 minutes of heaviness with a wicked melody. 'Brightest Star' is more of a mid-tempo track that is a bit of a change of pace, but keeps things going smoothly. 'Crying Inside' starts off softly, before the silence is smashed with another crushingly heavy riff. Other highlights include: 'Tortured Souls', 'Drowning', 'Just Like You' and the title song 'Out Of Time', which ends things nicely. The vocals of Molly Sirenne are as unique as they are haunting and beautiful. Her voice is the perfect compliment to the ethereal soundscapes the music creates.

Rott are a band that have plenty to offer. Out Of Time features 11-songs and 46-minutes worth of good songs, excellent songwriting and top notch performances. The overall package is quite impressive and well done. Rott are a band that can go a long way.

The music on Out Of Time speaks volumes about Rott's potential. Whether or not they put Idaho on the metal map remains to be seen, but I do know that Rott appear poised to carve their own niche in the metal world, and judging by the music eminating from this CD, they are off to a good start.

MQ: Where did the name Rott come from? What's the story behind that?

Molly: When we were thinking of a name for the band, we kicked around a few ideas looking for something that sounded kinda cool, but was heavy too. Rott sounded like something that was decaying and it was short. Also, we can say Rott on, instead of rock on or right on. Besides, my favorite breed of dogs is Rottweilers and I have a beautiful female as our mascot. There is a hidden meaning to it as well, an acronym for what the letters stand for.

MQ: How do you set yourselves apart from all the other female bands in your genre?

Rott: I am going to let Carrie Anne answer part of this. (Carrie Anne) Well I don’t really think the gender matters, to me it’s about the music and I would much rather people notice that, at least that is how I look at it as an artist. As far as setting apart from other bands I think if you listen carefully and hear the deeper meaning in the music then I think that is where most of the difference comes from. (Molly) It is not something deliberate as much as the various influences that blend together from artists I admire and listen to. I am from Seattle originally and growing up there I was impacted by Heart among others from an early age.

MQ: Do you think your style on stage is important to performances and appearances?

Molly: Of course, absolutely! Stage presentation is very important. It’s all about entertainment after all. Much like going to a play, watching a movie, or an athletic event. Except with music it can be even more emotional. The energy from the band and back from the crowd creates an atmosphere that is surreal at times. When you go to an event where the intensity is there and are spending your hard earned cash, you want to be transported to that alternate musical universe, or reality. You want to experience something that is magical and unique.

MQ: So ‘Out of Time’ was just released online and in stores on May 27th, how is that doing? It is flying off the shelves?

Molly: Our fans never cease to amaze us with their kindness and support. Sales are very strong thanks to Ravenheart Music in the UK promoting us and with our label Renaissance Records behind us. The album was independently released prior to May 27th and since then everything has been overwhelmingly positive. I am so grateful to everyone. The media has been very supportive as well, with interviews, airplay, contests and reviews. What we are planning to really generate excitement is gain some additional sponsorship and partner up with our label mates for an upcoming tour. Once you see us in your hometown there is no stopping the momentum.

MQ: What was your reaction upon finding out about the record contract?

Molly: Well you know when you see people on shows like ‘American Idol’ freak out when they get the chance to go to the next round? Well it is nothing like that, is euphoric a strong enough adjective? The day I found out is still vivid and always will be. Of course I was trying to figure out how to get the snow off my roof that day in a snowstorm but seriously, to be given the affirmation that our talent is recognized and dreams becoming reality is such a warm fuzzy. It’s like being given the tools to get the job done. I’ve been trying to fix this leaking pipe with a spoon and you just came by and gave me a wrench =)

MQ: Do you feel like you were having the "making it big moment"?

Molly: The definition of “making it big” always changes. Yes I did feel like that for sure, I would be lying if I said otherwise. I am truly happy, grateful and humbled by the whole deal really. To have Renaissance Records and John Edwards as my new boss and see the label logo on the CD is constantly making me smile. Yet, I’ll truly feel like we’ve accomplished our goal when the masses can have easy access to more than just the usual genres that are currently popular in the USA. It is the determination of not only the artists but also people like you Jess bringing more attention to this genre that has me really excited. Metal, Goth, Club, Industrial, Symphonic and Ska are just a sample teaser of what I would love to see commercially successful. Can you imagine what a happy place it would be if our genre had their own awards shows? I can.

MQ: On the homepage of the website, what is the meaning behind the dog with the cross in it's mouth?

Molly: Well, it would be fun to say it actually is a symbol I saw displayed in a crop circle near Stonehenge, or ancient hieroglyphics from the pyramids but I will be serious. This is a very good question! No one has ever asked us this before. It is symbolic for life, rebirth from death and how music can help reach people in ways many other things cannot. Satanism has nothing to do with it and I will leave it at that.

MQ: Do you find being from the United States that the fans are different in North America then in Europe?

Molly: American fans are hungry for this style and genre of music. Some of them just don’t know it yet. They are searching for something different and when they do find it are ecstatic, at least the ones I have come across anyway. They just know they’re tired of all the white bread, commercially pre-packaged boy/girl band crap. Europeans have quite an advantage. They had Nightwish fed to them in their baby bottles it seems and they’ve stayed loyal. I remember when I saw a Wind-Up Records ad for Fallen from Evanescence on TV. I literally started bawling I was so happy. I didn’t even know other bands were out there with the same agenda of non-conformity and being positive. And this one was succeeding big time.

MQ: Molly - How did you first know that you wanted to sing?

Molly: Isn’t singing like breathing? Even if you are not sure whether you are good its like one of the first things you do when you’re happy, sad, bored, playful, ect. As a kid I remember my mom being amazed I could remember all the lyrics to songs on the radio. I never lost that love and it just blossomed from there.

MQ: Dan - How does it feel working with these talented women?

Dan: To be in the same room with Molly and Carrie Anne gives me goosebumps actually. Their talent is mind-blowing. When we play together I really have to focus – a lot! It feels like an enormous power you are next to and I am not talking Marshall stacks. I guess it is magical in a way, kind of like supernatural stuff. It really is hard to describe in words. I know when we play people are overwhelmed by whatever energy is behind it. I would best describe it as love but in a way that gives and radiates outward.

MQ: Do you find that the band has an advantage or disadvantage being only 3 members?

Molly: Definitely an advantage. Three strong personalities are just the right amount. Not to say we wouldn’t welcome other “family members” in at some point. We consider ourselves a family and are very close. If the talent and compatibility were there, I would consider it. For the moment, work for hire has been great! We also have some very talented close friends who will be filling in spots on the tour.

MQ: How do you deal with all the attention from fans from all over the world?

Molly: I am actually very honored and humbled by it. Our fans continue to amaze me every day. I read the letters and emails and put the gifts and things up they give me and feel very blessed. I guess I deal with it by knowing that I am helping make a difference to someone as others did for me. Sometimes I think, “gosh is this for real?” Well it is and I want to thank everyone reading this from the bottom of my heart. All my love.

Carrie Anne: Ditto to what Molly said, it doesn’t quite seem real. As with anybody putting out a product into the world, it’s just really nice to have the positive feedback to know that people enjoy this music that we have put all of our time and effort into. Having the fans there to support us, really just makes us want to work harder and give more back to them.

Mission to promote female vocalists
By Cadisha Brown

A KIDDERMINSTER music mogul who promotes female-fronted heavy metal bands has taken up management of a US rock group.

Dave Smith started Ravenheart Music two years ago after hearing that there was prejudice against women in rock and heavy metal bands.

The full-time meteorologist, who promotes bands as a hobby, helped Idaho-based band, Rott, get a record deal with American label, Renaissance Records.

He is also helping to promote Kidderminster band, Oak.

The 53-year-old of Comberton Road, said: "Rock music is male oriented so I thought I would try and do something about it.

"I have had an interest in music from a young age and used to drive my parents barmy listening to Ozzy Osbourne's band Black Sabbath.

He continued: "Some of my artists have gone on to get record deals with labels in America.

"All the feedback I have been getting has been positive."

He added that it is still taboo to have a woman front a rock, heavy metal or gothic band.
